Driving here? Park in the lot at the trailhead for $5 or park at the end of Manoa road for free and walk 5 minutes.
Use the Lyon Arboretum for your GPS landmark. An arboretum is a botanical garden dedicated to trees (tropical ones, in the rainforest, and there's a waterfall in the back, too).
Wear durable shoes that you don't mind getting dirty (you may get mud on your shoes in the rainforest).
The rain-fed waterfall is especially spectacular during the winter rainy season.
The tour begins from your hotel, where you will be picked up in an air-conditioned passenger van and shuttled deep into the back of Manoa Valley, seeing points of interest along the way (President Obama's childhood neighborhood, for instance).
The trail itself is an easy 20-30 minute hike through lush tropical rain forest. The trail passes mountain streams and pools, ancient Hawaiian lo'i kalo (taro patches), ohi'a 'ai (mountain apples), wild guava, mango trees, and even coffee trees.
Before long you will arrive at Manoa Falls, a 150-foot waterfall that has been the site for such shows as Lost, Hawaii Five-O, Jurassic Park, and more.
Go for the guided tour with a certified naturalist knowledgeable in everything you will encounter during your hike and then some. Two times available for the guided tour: 8am and 2pm. The guided tour involves about two hours of walking time, and also includes the use of a hiking stick.
Or, do the self-guided tour if you would prefer to do things at your own pace. Comes with a special Manoa Falls trail map with flora and fauna guide.
The self-guided tour w/lunch includes not only the Trail map with flora and fauna guide but also a buffet lunch at the Tree Top Restaurant. The menu includes: Teriyaki chicken, steamed ginger fish, Kalua pork, chicken long-rice, fried noodles, white or brown rice, bread and butter, assorted fruit, potato salad, coleslaw and a salad bar. Lunch desserts and beverages are included too.
Not recommended for the elderly or those with walking or disability limitations. A good pair of jogging shoes is recommended. Expect to get a little muddy on this trail!
